I want this workbook!
One of the oldest compositions in Russian folk painting — Khokhloma — is the “Gingerbread.”
It was given this name because artists began imitating carved gingerbread molds, traditionally used in Russia for making festive treats decorated with beautiful patterns. Over three centuries ago, Khokhloma painters started placing this circular ornament on the bottoms of wooden plates, bowls, and ceremonial drinking vessels.

I call the “Gingerbread” composition the Russian “Mandala” because of its similarity in shape, elements, and — most importantly — its ancient Slavic symbolism. This symbolism reflects the traditional vision of the universe in the worldview of the ancient Slavs.

Though it may appear simple — and indeed it is made up only of basic elements — the “Gingerbread” can be looked at endlessly, always revealing new beauty.

Now anyone
can paint a “Gingerbread” (Russian "Mandala")!
Even without knowing the traditional
Khokhloma folk painting techniques. How?
